An Airbnb house on Lake Barkley, KY

    08/07/2018
    Boating, Season 0 – Before Full-time

We always seem to make the same mistake.  Every Year.

Was I thinking it was going to be comfortable in August?  Sheesh!  It was tropical weather-style hot and humid for our 5 day mini vacation.  On the plus side, our back yard was by Lake Barkley.

Where is Lake Barkley, you say?  Well, it’s Kentucky Lake’s easterly smaller and quieter cousin.  We were there from Wednesday to Sunday and many mornings we had the entire bay to ourselves.  Well, almost, if you don’t include the red fox, the river otter, and several larger squak-ey heron!

Beautiful quiet morning on Lake Barkley

The road trip down was easy – mainly highway roads with several pit stops for both the truck and it’s occupants (fill up on diesel, caffeine and sugar!).  Roads did get a little “interesting” right around the houses – its a very hilly area, so you’d have to expect that!

    Road Trip!

We were initially surprised by the size of watercraft on this lake.  Our Hurricane boat seemed so tiny in comparison to the other boats around.  But it simply didn’t make sense why there were so many HUGE boats… and from EVERYWHERE!

Well, we learned quickly that Kentucky Lake (and its cousin) are part of the Great Loop – essentially a huge loop up the eastern seaboard through the great lakes and through rivers and lakes down to the Gulf… which makes sense!  So, definitely cool to look at the home ports of some of the boats.

We stayed at a beautiful home, rented from Airbnb.  It had a ton of room, and best of all, the boat dock!  Yay!  We didn’t have to launch the boat every day – we could get up early in the morning, make coffee and be fishing before the sun was up!

This was our first time renting on Airbnb, so we were a little hesitant, but the owners (Rhonda and Garrett) were extremely helpful, and provided a ton of information even before our trip.  It was such a great experience, I’d definitely do it again!

With 5 people with us, we did a lot of cooking at the house.  They had one of those amazing egg grills, which was fun to cook steak, shrimp, chicken… mmmm… But we still broke out the Blackstone grill for breakfasts!
