I (unfortunately) have an update on our “motorhome” insurance policy for our Ram 5500 and truck camper combo….

A few episodes ago, I posted how I was so excited to have reduced our commercial truck insurance. It does go through several points, so it’s a good watch if you own a commercial truck to haul your truck camper.

What Went Wrong

Unfortunately, for how we travel, this specific “motorhome” insurance will not work for us. The key differentiator is whether you remove your camper when you’re traveling. If you don’t, then this option will be perfect for you!

If you’re like us and you remove your camper and use your truck separately, this will NOT work for you.

Specific Restrictions

This policy is lower in cost because it essentially “marries” your truck and truck camper from an insurance perspective and converts it into a “motorhome” policy. Because of this style of insurance, you would only be covered if you keep your truck camper on your truck. After discussing the situation with FCIS Insurance, I found out there are a few exceptions. You will be insured if you truck camper is off the truck while getting service on your truck.

You will also be insured if you remove the camper at a campsite (for example) and the truck is parked nearby, but you will not be able to use the truck separately. A good example of this is when we’re at Gary’s parents – we remove the truck camper and park the truck while using their car to get around town.

This May Still Work For You

If you are hauling a toad with your truck camper so you don’t take the truck camper off, this option may still be immensely beneficial.

Unfortunately, I am not sure if this insurance helps with getting over the Mexico border with a commercial vehicle. If you have done this (successfully or not), let us know!
